You have likely heard this from me before, but every time I go to write one of these, I experience serious writer’s block. So, I’m going to take a different approach – in hopes that you will find it both enjoyable and relatable.
I’m a mom of a 3-year-old and 8-year-old, both boys. Being a mom is such a gift – and being a mom who also gets to be an entrepreneur while being totally hands-on and involved with them is not a privilege I take lightly. As I watch them interact and establish themselves in this big world, I take such joy seeing things through their eyes – they teach me so much.
My 8-year-old, Levi, is a hockey goalie for a travel team here in Michigan. In the beginning, as is normal, he played every position, then edged toward defense. Then, about 18 months ago, I really started to see him gravitate toward the net – and offer to play the part whenever he could.
Levi is a thinker – a builder – an engineer. He can see the ice as a chess board – with players as chess pieces, moving about playing their parts, and understand the play. While he was never the fastest or most aggressive skater in those first few years of hockey, he was the one taking everything in. He just finished his first full season in net – and smiled through it all, win or lose.
He is still so young, yet has grown so much thanks to the passion he has for the position. Ask him on any given day how much he likes being a goalie on a scale of 1-10, and he will always give you an answer of 1,000 or more.
Why am I telling you this? Because I want to encourage you to really look at your team. What is each person’s individual talent and passion? You hire people for certain positions – but as they learn the business and the ropes, are the better suited and more passionate about something else? Do you have an admin who would rock and love to be part of your marketing team? Do you have a PM who is a rockstar with commercial sales, and would love to move out of the field from running jobs to handling commercial sales and ERPs?
Give it some thought.
