With Desiccants, it is about processing the air, or Air Changes per Hour (ACH). The higher the Class, the more ACHs are needed to capture the humidity or create a better vapor pressure differential. Class 1 = one ACH; Class 2 = two ACH, and Classes 3 & 4 = 3 ACH.
For refrigerants, let’s use the LGR class factors.
Class 1 Factor = 100
Class 2 Factor = 50
Classes 3 & 4 Factor = 40
Simply put, on a Class 1 loss (least potential evaporation), you divide the entire cubic feet of the drying chamber by 100. Another way to state this is your dehumidification needs to have the capacity to remove 1 pint of water per day (PPD) for every 100 cubic feet of air in the drying chamber.
Class 2 (significant potential evaporation): Divide the total cubic feet by 50, or remove 1 PPD for every 50 cubic feet of air in the drying chamber.
Classes 3 & 4 (greatest potential evaporation or need for significant vapor pressure differential): Divide cubic feet of drying chamber by 40, or remove 1 PPD for every 40 cubic feet of air in the chamber.
