Q: The profits on my jobs are not consistent. What strategies can be used to stay on target?

Profitability isn’t lost all at once—it leaks out in small, avoidable ways throughout production. The most effective way to protect against margin erosion is to understand what costs are being allocated up front and then review them on a regular basis. Don’t wait until your job is finished only to be surprised at the end that we didn’t hit the profit we wanted.

Every job should clearly communicate what “success” looks like. Define a way to approve spending and set limits. When the production team understand the financial guardrails in place, they make better day-to-day decisions—whether it’s authorizing an extra labor hour or ordering additional materials.

Weekly productions meetings allow teams to review their WIP (Work in Progress). It creates a conversation around controlling spending to ensure it is in line with what was projected.
