How Can Small Contractors Compete with Higher-Paying Companies?

Dear Kristy,

How can I compete with larger contractors that offer higher pay when I’m a smaller company with tighter margins?

You’re not alone—many small business owners wrestle with this exact challenge. Bigger contractors can write bigger paychecks, but that doesn’t always mean they win the talent game. Pay matters, but it isn’t the only factor candidates consider.

As a smaller company, you can offer what large organizations often struggle with: culture, flexibility, and opportunity. Workers want to feel valued, respected, and part of a team where their contributions are noticed. In a smaller shop, employees often wear multiple hats, which gives them a chance to learn more skills and grow faster than they might at a big corporation where roles are siloed.

Think about what makes your company unique and lean into it. Can you offer more flexible scheduling? Faster career advancement? A family-like environment where people aren’t just a number? Benefits don’t have to be expensive either—sometimes things like tool allowances, extra training, or a Friday lunch go a long way.

And finally, be transparent. Let candidates know upfront that while you may not always match the highest dollar offer, you provide stability, personal growth, and a work environment where they’ll be more than just a body in the field. The right people will choose that over an extra dollar an hour.
