I Haven’t Found a Handbook Yet that Prepared Me for Business Ownership

It’s been a few, well, decades since my college years, but as I look back, I don’t ever recall anyone offering a class on what it means to be a business owner. Sure, I took all of the business finance classes, a marketing course or two, and many business classes with textbook answers. Most of those courses taught me how to work in someone else’s business.

The path less traveled to business ownership is filled with highs and lows. It’s a space where what you do every day affects the livelihoods of others and the ultimate outcomes of your success. Business ownership is so much more than a set of rules.

I think that’s why successful business owners have to be bold, ready to take a chance while measuring each decision against a bigger picture. Business owners must walk the tightrope between risk and reward, learning along the way from every triumph and failure.

Mastering the game of business takes more than financial know-how and a head for strategy. There are key principles that bring about success, from diversifying revenue to building the right team, but there’s a certain something else that is required for success.

As a business owner, you’ve taken on so much more than a career. You’re living a life that requires you to adapt, learn, and grow. Business ownership is a wild ride, and understanding what keeps your business healthy is an all-around win.
