If Our Jobs Are So Profitable, Where Is the Cash

Many restoration contractors assess job profitability by tracking revenue, labor, and subcontractor expenses. However, this narrow view often overlooks hidden costs that impact true margins.

Several expenses never find their way back to individual jobs. These include unallocated labor burdens and salaried employees. Equipment-related costs such as depreciation, maintenance, fuel, and transportation. Material expenses, particularly bulk-purchases, consumables and supply losses, which can all quietly erode profitability.

Let’s not forget about the cost it takes to run a business. Things like administrative overhead, travel time, marketing & technology expenses, mobile devices, utility bills, and other expenses which are essential to operation. Yet most companies do not have the time or patience to distribute these back to the job level.

The result is artificially inflated margins and a false sense of financial performance. Over time, these overlooked costs compound. Companies may unknowingly be underpricing work and overestimating profitability. Organizations that take the time to capture true cost, gain clearer financial visibility and are able to structure better compensation and incentives packages based on actual margins.

At PSA, we are committed to delivering #ContractorFirst solutions that empower businesses to leverage technology more effectively—driving greater efficiency, accountability, and profitability.
