I’m going to give you the answer to this hot question right out of the gate: it depends.
It’s rare these days, that I have a conversation with anyone in the restoration industry that doesn’t include at least a few moments of discussion on claim volume and overall year-over-year revenue.
Depending on who I talk to, I get a mixed bag of answers. There are some (both big and small) who are insistent that claim volume is down (statistically, this is true!). There are others who say they’ve seen the data, but for their business, gosh, this is a great year. And again, that’s true for companies of all shapes and sizes.
Here is what I am seeing from my seat – through conversations with Cotality and Verisk on data, chats with restorers on how business is going, and check-ins with vendors on what they are seeing and experiencing in the market this year:
Overall claims volume is truly down. This has been confirmed by Cotality and Verisk – and you can learn more about this in recent Restoration Today podcasts. There are other outside sources, like Insurance Business America, that also confirm this. According to their data, overall property claims are down 7% from Q1 of 2024 to Q1 of 2025. One in four homeowners say they now intentionally skip filing smaller claims in order to avoid increased insurance premiums.
The average dollar amount, per claim, is up. Based on the last point I made, this makes sense as homeowners forego those smaller claims. Plus, there are many other factors like increased replacement costs, inflation on material costs and labor, etc.
The companies that are thriving have good systems and processes in place, especially when it comes to sales. Think software that integrates, systems like EOS, relationship builders in sales roles, and so on. Want to know more about this? Reach out to me and I’ll share our most recent podcasts and articles on the topic!
No matter what you’re feeling this year – it’s slow and awful, or it’s booming and you can’t keep up, you’re not alone! Hang in there, keep at it, and thank you for all you do.
