The Carpet Bonding Process

This ease of separation is because the adhesive used to hold the two backings together is temporarily weakened due to moisture. However, it is essential to note that this weakening is only temporary and should not be used to justify carpet replacement. Restorers should not attempt to check the adhesive’s strength by tugging on the backings while wet. Instead, they must handle the damp carpet carefully to avoid delamination. This can be achieved by gently lifting and moving the rug to prevent any damage to the adhesive.
Some of the causes of delamination include:
- Improperly specified carpet for the application
- Improper cushion/pad
- Improper installation
- Manufacturing defects
- Excessive wear

- Simple age, wear and tear

- Improper disengagement of the carpet from the tack strip
- Incorrect floating of carpet during the drying process (flopping carpet)
- Excessive folding or stretching of carpet during the restoration process
- Overly aggressive extraction with improper tools and/or tugging at the backings to test the adhesive strength while the carpet is wet
- Excessive heat from carpet cleaning
- Improv mixing of cleaning or restoration cleaning products
The cleaner or restorer must recognize and document any delamination during the initial assessment and inspection of the area to be cleaned or impacted from damage. Delaying the report of delamination can result in inquiries from the customer or insurer about why drying efforts were performed on a textile that should have been replaced. It is crucial to address this issue promptly and efficiently to avoid any further complications.

Primary damage — refers to the adverse effects of direct exposure to water or water-borne contaminants on a material’s appearance or functionality. These effects can be reversible or permanent. However, damage from tracking or spreading water is not considered primary damage.
Secondary damage — refers to the harm caused to a material from contact with water or water-borne contaminants, resulting in reversible or permanent changes to its appearance or function.
The cleaner or restorer should note two important points regarding this “damage” language: the words in bold type and the statement regarding reversibility or permanence of materials, assemblies, systems, and contents conditions. Properly documenting and photographing the work area and the objects within is essential when carrying out cleaning or restoration work. This applies to routine and comprehensive cleaning and restoration of an entire building (commercial or residential). Extensive documentation and photographs of preexisting, primary, or secondary damage are crucial to help identify and rectify any issues that may arise during the process.
Accurate documentation and detailed photographic evidence can be invaluable in insurance claims and legal proceedings. They serve as evidence of the extent of the damage and the restoration work carried out. This can help ensure the restoration work is done precisely and carefully, resulting in a successful outcome.
