Where Are They All Going?

The Early Foundations of the Biorecovery Industry

Some may assert that the Biorecovery industry remains in its early stages, despite the foundational work being laid in the early 1990s. Pioneers such as Don McNulty, Kent Berg, the late Ron Gospodarski, Tim Riley, and Gordy Powell are all recognized for their contributions in nurturing and establishing the groundwork for the industry as it stands today.

Those who are deeply involved and committed to upholding the ethics and standards of the industry would readily affirm that the Biorecovery Industry is far from being in its infancy; rather, it is significantly fractured and compromised due to untimely growth. Issues such as greed, mismanagement, and inadequate background checks on acquisitions have left the industry in its current fractured state.

Ethics, Standards, and Industry Leadership

Over the years, the American Bio Recovery Association (ABRA) has actively promoted ethics, values, and education, alongside the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), which offers certification in the industry’s standard of care through the S540. Both Jim Holland and Gordy Powell are acknowledged for their roles in bringing the IICRC and ABRA together to initiate the groundwork for the S540 in 2010. Fast forward to 2026, approximately 30 to 35 years later, the bio recovery industry faces challenges like those encountered by other restoration firms today. In the past, there was a lineage of growth in which children would follow in their parents’ footsteps to eventually take over the family business established around the proverbial dining room table. A small cleaning company would evolve into a large enterprise. A contemporary example of this lineage connection is Ben Looper of Southeast Restoration and his son Holden, as well as Gary Moore, the founder of ATI, along with his sons Jeff, Scott, and Ryan. But nowadays, it appears to be increasingly rare for family members to express a desire to inherit the family restoration business.  Even more so in the Biorecovery Industry.

The Changing Structure of Restoration Businesses

Consequently, what does this imply for the growth of the Biorecovery industry today?  What we are witnessing in the smaller to mid-size companies, is one of the employees sharing the vision rather than a family member wanting to buy out the owner as they set to retire, to carry on the well-known and established name in the region.  As for Biorecovery franchising, it appears to be a hit or miss with growth and success.  Much of the growth depends on how involved the corporate office engages in.  If the corporate office stays involved and helps develop the growth of the brand and if they have a fair and reasonable royalty in place, I believe you will see success.

Acquisitions and the Changing Market

Finally, in today’s market, we are witnessing acquisitions of companies. This comes with caution.  The devil is in the details.  We have observed the trials and errors from a large brand-name company bringing a damaged name in the industry into their fold to create a portfolio.  Then there are those who are building a brand name on the go, where it seems ethics, quality, and values take a back seat to a big sale.  In essence, throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

A New National Player Emerges

Fast track to 2026. The new kid on the block seems to be a firm from New England called Trauma Services. They are showing dominance in the industry by branding their firm nationwide with acquisitions.  CEO Mike Wiseman was quoted as saying that others have had their ample opportunities to build a brand properly, but only to get lost in business.  So, should you have a family restoration business, and your children show little to no interest in following in the family’s footsteps, maybe it’s time to look for the next acquisition.

Gordy Powell

Gordy Powell entered the victim services industry in 1996, starting with Metro Crime Scene Disposal Unit, which later became A-1 Bio Clean Service, operated alongside his wife and business partner, Sheila Powell. In 2010, Gordy merged operations with a strategic partner to form Georgia Clean & Associates, expanding services to include hoarding cleanup, clandestine lab remediation, and medical waste processing.

Gordy later founded RedFlagClaims.com, an independent third-party peer review service for property losses. After years of working closely with insurance adjusters, he was frequently asked to review inflated bills from restoration companies—prompting Red Flag’s broader claim review work across fire, water, mold, meth lab, asbestos, and roofing cases.

Following his partner’s retirement in 2016, Gordy continued operating Georgia Clean alongside a former FBI agent who brought a deep commitment to supporting families impacted by trauma.

That same year, Gordy helped create BioPTO.org, the Bio Professional Trade Organization. BioPTO established Georgia’s first ethical standards for trauma scene cleanup after Gordy and peers witnessed families being re-victimized by predatory practices, including liens placed on homes. Georgia became the first state to set a model standard for victim care.

Gordy also served as Vice President of the American Bio Recovery Association (ABRA) and spent four years on its Board of Directors, supporting training and governance for the bio recovery profession.
