“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
– Clare Pooley, The Authenticity Project
They say if you had your children in reverse order, you would’ve stopped at one, right? Well, I am not saying I would’ve stopped at one – Luca, our 4-year-old, is a bundle of wonderfulness (with a full dose of sass), but gosh did Levi have us fooled about parenthood. From day one, Levi has been calm, level-headed, and kind. On a daily basis, through his actions, he reminds and prompts me to be a better human.
Levi finished third grade this year, which also marks the fourth year of his teachers consistently using one word to describe him. Every year. Every teacher. That word: kindness. In a world where raising children becomes increasingly difficult, in my opinion, I cannot think of a better word to have my child described as, consistently. He opens doors for others, is the first to step in when someone gets hurt, is friends with everyone and makes fun of no one; his heart is so pure and sweet, it’s a gift straight from God. I also realize I’m biased, but he is the sweetest, most caring big brother. Just look at those faces!
I pray constantly that Levi will carry that level of kindness and compassion for others throughout his life (without being a pushover, but that’s for a different publisher’s note), because gosh – couldn’t this world use more kindness?
Kindness is the main theme in this issue of C&R! We had yet another stellar Restoring Kindness Month in May, with dozens of restorers across the U.S. doing random acts of kindness throughout their communities. You can see some of the projects showcased on page 38. Not sure what RK is? You can learn more and add your company to our map at www.restoringkindnessusa.com! Our goal is to have that map so covered in hearts, you can no longer see the map itself!
Restoring Kindness doesn’t just happen in May, though! We are thrilled to officially partner with Jon Isaacson’s SOCKTember movement in September (see page 38)! Now is the time to assemble your team, and start collecting those socks! May the best team win!
