Mega Problems at a Mega Church

In early October 2018, the Florida Panhandle braced for what was projected to be a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds reaching 111-129 miles per hour. In reality, Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida panhandle on Oct. 10 as a Category 5, making it one of the most damaging hurricanes ever to hit the region. And while some parts of the Panhandle were not affected, other areas were devastated with destruction beyond comprehension. Hurricane Michael became a very serious threat quickly, right before landfall, leaving very little time for the residents in the impact

AGA Releases Position Statement on TPA Scope Change Requests

The RIA Board of Directors recently approved RIA’s first ever position paper. This milestone is the product of the hard work of the AGA’s Third Party Administrator (TPA) Subcommittee. It addresses best practices for restorers confronted with requests from TPAs for changes in scope and/or price. Confusion arises when TPA staff allege that these requests are based on program agreements. In that case, the TPA should specifically cite the contract provision that justifies the request. Contractors should be wary of arbitrary and capricious requests for price reductions, and, when they are not required by the

What’s New in Water Remediation Technology

Smart technology has become prevalent, but it has had minimal influence over the restoration industry. Many of the smart products available in the market, he cautions, do not integrate with each other, which limits their ability to improve water restoration

Assessing and Reducing Fungal Growth in Buildings

Restoration professionals need to provide a professional and defendable assessment of a building potentially affected by mold growth. To do that, they need to understand the impact of indoor air quality on fungal growth and familiarize themselves with the ASTM 7338 Standard for Fungal Growth in Buildings. However, while RIA members diligently seek to improve their own competence and product offerings, part of their effort has the distinct purpose of distinguishing their brand from the many far less reputable restoration brands that currently occupy the marketplace. Sadly, it seems that there are many restoration brands that are willing to provide services that
