Dear David: What is Subrogation?

Dear David, As a restoration contractor, I strive to give my customers excellent service. I receive satisfaction by putting my customers’ property and their lives back to normal. I usually work with my customer and their insurance adjustor. Recently, however, a “subrogation representative” from my customer’s insurer called asking for information. What is subrogation, and what are my responsibilities?   Dear Satisfied, In principle, subrogation is pretty straightforward. Once an insurer pays its policyholder’s claim, the insurer stands in place of the policyholder and retains the right to recover from responsible third parties. The

Is Your Business Ready for Analytics?

Great question… but, that question may have additional questions. Like, what does “analytics” mean? Or, I could even go deeper and ask, “What do I analyze?”  In the world of restoration, many companies have learned to just react to their customers’ needs and timing. The Squeeze

So let me see if I understand this correctly. Some time ago, property insurance carriers began insulating themselves from unscrupulous, litigation-prone, transaction-driven contractors by “partnering” with contractors they could trust. They formed departments responsible for locating and vetting contractors of various trades, and in exchange for feeding claims to these contractors, the contractors would abide by the carrier’s service level agreement – including mostly reasonable estimating guidelines. In concept it makes sense. The estimating guidelines typically resulted in lower invoices, but the contractor was receiving these claims with no business development expense. The carriers,
